Meet the Judges

Acceptance Juror, Jim McVicker. A native Californian, Jim discovered 19th Century French landscape paintings at age 21—and he was hooked. He studied art history, painted copies of French impressionist landscapes, and took life drawing and painting classes at Chaffey Community College. Jim has been a full-time artist since 1975, working from life, from direct observation of nature, looking at and studying great art from the past, and learning from more accomplished artists. Jim paints most of his landscapes, small and large, on location. He may complete a small work in one sitting, but he also loves to take these small and large works back to the location for many sittings—sometimes over weeks, sometimes not until the following season. Jim continues to paint daily, following his passion for painting from life to capture the light, atmosphere, space, and the mysterious beauty all around us. Jim's work hangs in numerous public and private collections and he has earned numerous awards for his plein air work. Awards Judge, Dee Beard Dean is a nationally recognized artist who has been painting since her childhood in northern Indiana. She began her formal studies at Kendall College of Art and Design and the New York Academy of Art. Earlier, Dee was a well-known fashion designer and manufactured her own clothing line and sold in stores nationwide. Dee later escaped the hectic fashion-world lifestyle and returned to her first love, painting. Her greatest inspirations come from painting en plein air where her elevated senses guide her in creating painterly landscapes filled with evocative light and dramatic shadows. Her highly collectible work hangs in corporate and private collections throughout the United States. Dee is a Signature Member of the American Impressionist Society, an Honorary Signature Member of International Plein Air Painters (IPAP), a member of Oil Painters of America and American Women Artists. She is the founder of Plein Air Painters of the Southeast (PAP-SE).
