A GRAND Event!

The paint is dry and the artists have left town for now. But between June 16 and 20, Frederick County and City were the subjects of this year's juried plein air artists at their easels—and at their artistic best. The artists came from 15 states and Canada. Many were discovering Frederick County for the first time—and they were enchanted. Artists painted day and night in competition for $14,500 in awards.

The Grand Exhibition  During Easels in Frederick week, the 30 juried artists became acquainted with local collectors and enjoyed Frederick County's special hospitality. And at the conclusion of the 5-day event, residents and visitors joined the artists for the plein-air celebration's Collectors Preview and the free public exhibit. Attendees purchased a total of 51 eye-catching new images of Frederick City and County to grace the walls of area homes and businesses.

Flying paint  On Saturday morning, June 21, juried artists shared the heart of downtown Frederick with 50 additional artists — including a talented youth group — during Easels in Frederick's third Quick Draw contest. The adult artists vied for $2,000 in awards and prizes and the chance to sell their work on the spot. And sell they did! Despite cloudy skies and spitting rain, participating juried and nonjuried artists sold 28 artworks during the jam-packed, one-hour Art Market.

Discovering art  Free talks by awards judge Anne Blair Brown and noted artist Walt Bartman prefaced the weekend events, as did a Youth Plein Workshop.

Meet the winners and see their prize-winning work, and get more details about the event.

Thank you!  Of course, the fourth Easels in Frederick event would not be possible without the financial generosity of our donors, the many in-kind contributors, the enthusiasm of our volunteers and the support of the community.

Mark your calendar  Planning is already under way for the next Easels in Frederick — June 15-20, 2015. Look for the schedule of events and online application information for artists at here on our website in mid- to late-November 2014.
